Post by RayProudfoot »

Rather than paste the Cumulus annual summary of 2013 I decided on a slightly different format...

Summary of 2013.
Temperature comparisons with Met Office station at Woodford, Cheshire (1981-2010). Information sourced from NOAA reports.

The year was 0.2C above average.
Very warm months: July +2.5; October +2.0; December +2.0
Slightly warmer months: January +0.2; June +0.4; August +0.8
Slightly cooler months: February -0.8; April -0.2; May -0.7; September -0.1; November -0.5
Very cold months: March -3.0

A drier year than 2012. 29.96" (761mm) of rain.
Wettest months: May, July and October. All other months had below average rainfall.
Only one day with more than 1" of rain - 28 July thunderstorm.
96 days with 0.10" or more.
166 days with 0.02" or more.

Average wind speed over 2013 - 5.3mph
Highest gust 54mph
Dominant direction SSW.

To summarise: six warmer than average months and six cooler. Coldest March for 51 years; Warmest July for 7 years. Max station temperature broken twice. Drier than average.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Here on the North Devon coast things were quite unusual this year.

An unusually high number of air frosts - 32. (10 - 15 is more likely)
Lowest temperature was -3.6 on 3rd March.
Highest temperature was 28.5 on 21st July.
Mean av. Temperature was 10.5, which is about average for here, but slightly higher than last year

The average wind speed (8.2mph) and wind run (72460 mi) was actually lower than the last few years; the recent gales not making up for a generally quiet year.

Rainfall has been lower than usual at 1005 mm, however the number of 'wets days' is a depressing 196!

In summary a wet start to the year starting with Ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald at the end of January with similar falls to the 2011 rain drying out to below average for most of August to December but a large number of thunderstorms were present during November. Mostly cooler early in the year with a warm Autumn and Winter ahead of hot spells from late Winter into summer.

As a side note the all time maximum temperature of 38.5 from December 2012 looks under threat with 40 degrees forecast on Saturday for Brisbane which is 12 km to the southeast of here and we often record a degree or two higher here.
