December 2013 UK Storms pressure changes.
Currently, pressure is dropping here at 2.64hpa / hr. Can anyone beat that?
There are several big storms forecast to hit the UK in the next week so it will be interesting to see how extreme these pressure changes are as they can't currently be captured by Cumulus.

I'm not surprised you've beaten my reading Bruce. It's because Cumulus can't store it I started this thread. At least I'll have a record here but of course it could change again when I'm not monitoring it.
It would be a nice addition to Cumulus. Wink wink, nudge nudge Steve.

Hi Ray,
Storm Bernd gave me my first ever instance of pressure "Falling very rapidly" with a drop of 2.9hPa / hr!
The change from 2200 last night to just before 2000 tonight is a wapping 1015 to 984. It's rising now but not at any great rate

“It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily.
"So it is."
"And freezing."
"Is it?"
"Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately.”

Shouldn't you be grounded in this weather? Oh, that's the beauty of a sim I suppose.steve wrote:Sorry, too busy flying this Islander. Quite tricky in this windRayProudfoot wrote:It would be a nice addition to Cumulus. Wink wink, nudge nudge Steve.

I had FVR too for a short time Mike. Interesting weather but after that severe squall at 8.15pm my anemometer gave up the ghost. Bummer. A blustery day tomorrow before another battering on Friday night.mikechristelow wrote:Hi Ray,

It's now rising quickly! It'll be interesting to see how high it gets before it starts to fall again...

30.71hPa here Mark. Shows both our stations are well set-up.
According to this site the pressure is forecast to drop to 967hPa in the early hours of Christmas Eve (next Tuesday). Given my record low is 966.85 there's a possibility of another new record. Hopefully nothing will land on my console after last night's unfortunate episode.

December 2013 UK Storms pressure changes.
It was certainly a strange day.
The pressure dropped from 1015 at midnight to 988 just before 6pm.
Then the pressure rose 4hPa in just 2 minutes. (Just avoiding my spike limit) During the same time the temperature dropped from 11.5 to 7.5 while 4mm of rain was dumped on me! After that the wind which was gusting at 42 mph suddenly dropped to around 16 mph. I've never seen such a rapid change in pressure over such a short time.

Re: December 2013 UK Storms pressure changes.
Logjam,
There are huge variations in temperature in the Atlantic at present hence the queue of violent storms heading our way.
The pressure changes on Wednesday were a classic sign of a fast moving deep depression. Expect more of the same tonight and next week.
The boundary of warm and cold air (cold front) is a battlefront hence the intense rain. Wednesday's was particularly violent. I recorded a rain rate of over 6" (150mm) per hour which for December is massive. It created a new record for December for me and of course a new gust record just before something hit my anemometer.
I'm sure plenty of other stations had their December records broken on Wednesday.

Thank you for that explanation. It certainly makes the hobby interesting when these events happen. Up until now the pressure graphs have been long sweeping curves. To see a sudden leap like that along with sudden changes in other parameters at the same time was notable.
It would seem there are going to be a few opportunities for unusual weather over the next week or so.

There's another monster low heading for the UK on Christmas Eve. Forecast central pressure of 928hPa at 0600GMT on 24 Dec around 100 miles WNW of the Outer Hebrides.

Best wishes to you guys there, GFS seems to show quite the monster there. That monster might not drop us here in Portugal to below 1000 hPa but some "fun" will be had with the wind values Decent gusts forecast and some rain, but you guys will be getting quite the heat of it!
