August 2013 in UK/Europe/World

Post by RayProudfoot »

Crikey! Here we are on the first day of August and my August maximum has already been smashed! Currently 30.1C and within half a degree of the all-time record achieved just 13 days ago. Is it about to be broken again? :o

LATER: It was broken! 31.3C at 17:59. Hottest day since 2006 probably. Station records started May 2009.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

33.1°C at the moment so its tied with the maximum of July 23th.
We are expecting the hottest day of the year, with a maximum of 35°C.
The alltime High for August is 36.4°C, but i doubt that we will reach that far. ;)
Best Regards

Georg

We had a high of 35.9°C yesterday at 5:27 p.m. making it the second highest maximum in August, since i started my records in 2006.

Also the night remained very warm, it was still 27.8°C warm by midnight and the temperature fell under 25°C as late as 5 a.m. in the morning.
The low of this morning was then a refreshing 21.7°C at 8:50 a.m.
If it remains like this until midnight, this would be a new high minimum record, we will see. ;)
Best Regards

Georg

I missed a new record down the road here Ray, 29.8 against my all-time of 30.8 set in June 2011. (My records star Jan '10)

There must have been a lot of hot air between Wilmslow and Cheadle Hulme to push my temp up Mark. :D

Certainly a fine example of the Spanish Plume

35.1ºC here at the moment. An "awesome" minimum of 25,7ºC, which is normal here whenever the wind is from the NE!

In the month of August we had a monthly average temperature of 16.4 C which is 0.1 C above average. Minimum temperatures ranged from 2.1 to 14.2 with an average of 8.4 which is 0.6 below average. There was a lack of cool mornings for the last month of winter more so in the second half of the month. Maximum temperatures averaged 24.4 which is 0.7 below average and ranged between 21.3 and 28.6 with a large number of clear sunny days and many days quite unseasonably warm particularly towards the end of the month.

In August we receive 0.0 mm, with the long term average being 33.1mm. The rainfall to date is 1146.2mm after big totals early in the year and average rainfall until July. The yearly total is 402.8 mm above the long term average of 743.4 mm for January to August. However August has been very dry and we need some rain, but July to September (late winter to early spring) can be dry time of year. No rain has been recorded here since July 31 with the dry spell now 31 days. This happened last year with dangerous fire conditions and a hot summer which did not break until late January 2013. The long term forecast does not promise decent rain with a 50 to 60 per cent of above average rainfall for the next few months. Last Month it looked like we were going to get above rainfall for the spring.

We had quite a few windy days with the highest wind gust of 46.7 km/hr on the 20th and a monthly wind run of 960.2 km (July was 822.6 km) with more onshore south east winds with a lack of cooler south west winds except at the start of the month. Air pressure was near normal between 1007.4 hPa on the 8th and 1026.5 on the 25th. There continues to be lack of low pressure systems and cold fronts with much warmer weather as a result. The average minimum air pressure was 1014.5 hPa (0.5 below average) and average maximum air pressure of 1020 hPa (0.3 below average). Average minimum humidity was 40 per cent (3 per cent below average) and average maximum of 88.1 (2.2 per cent below average) with humidity ranging from 25 per cent on the 20th and 99 per cent on the 18th.

In terms of records broken in August there were not that many with the following monthly record made:

-Lowest Air daily air pressure range 1.8 hPa 18 August 2013

And no all time records were made

After the all-time high of 31.3C on the 1st the remainder of August here was uneventful.

3 days with max above 25C, below average rainfall and no significant weather. Average temp was 0.8C above normal, average max was 21.6C and average min 12.8C.

The summer was the warmest since 2006. After a miserable spring it was very welcome.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.
