how can I protect the new one from suffering the same fate? Maybe in the 15 minutes the USB port is going to sleep? I'd ensure that the ports power management doesn't allow this (if it is set).

Glen, it looks like you've got you read around. Just to point out the oblivious issue with using IP's. Each modem restart and location move can get different IP's each time, and even possibly on both the host or client ends. DNS updaters like No-IP could be of help if you don't at least have a stati...

There's a few of us that dumped our FineOffset transmitters and receivers and replaced them with Werk_AG's WeatherDuino Pro2 system. This uses the rain and wind sensors from the FineOffSet but provides stability and accuracy of a Davis system but is more configurable than a Davis system. You can hoo...
