Re: Sunshine Recorder

Hi For those that wanted to go down the DIY route I believe there is enough information in the early part of the thread to do that. Having said that it would be up to the user to find a way of improving the accuracy and it is so long ago that I can hardly remember myself what I did so would not real...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi During the last three days when it has rained the results of the funnel modified RG11 against the Manual Gauge are: RG11 using 0.3 multiplier and 0.2mm bucket size 1.0mm 8.8mm 20.8mm Manual Gauge 0.6mm 11.1mm 19.0mm Not exact but close. The Cumulus RG is seriously under-reading by a factor of abo...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi
So far my funnel modified RG11 set at 0.2mm tip size appears to need a factor of around 0.3 in most conditions compared to the manual gauge. But it's early days yet. The un-modified one is seriously under reading in today's continuous moderate rain.

Re: Sunshine Recorder

Hi In answer to Ray and cleaning - my original recorder has been running since October 2010 and has never been cleaned but west Cornwall does have quite clean air. Positioning under the moving anemometer would probably deter birds from perching although I have never seen a bird on my two on separate...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi Pete
Did you check the debug log to see if Cumulus RG had any double tips

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi Bruce I can see that with such a small tip unit it would not take many drops to trigger the relay but mine is set to 0.2mm and that takes a number of drops to operate the relay so they must be counted or the volume calculated somewhere. Can I ask if Bruce is a family name - my ancestor Bruce's ha...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

HI so i think that if the rg11 has detected rain and is operating the relay when another drop lands on the area it misses it I don't think that is right - the drops are counted individually and the count operates the bucket. I reckon it would need 720mm/hr rainfall to get close to that happening and...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi I now have a rain protected version of the RG with Funnel - involving plastic drain pipe and messy silcone sealer but at least the rain can't fall directly onto the RG. I tried a test with a hose sprinkler but it is very difficult to get consistant 'rainfall' on both the RG and the manual gauge s...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi
Looking at the select graph could the Cumulus reset (restart?) have put in the extra tip (that depends on the tipsize used). Just re-read and the reset was 10am - maybe a bird sat on the RG

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi Experiment 2 DSCF2039.JPG The curious addition causes two series of drops falling roughly over the masked (sensor) areas. The results were interest if not terribly informative at this stage. A full 25mm of 'rain' actually recorded 33mm (the first time I've seen an over-read). But oddly 5mm rain r...

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi
As you say there might only be small areas (four ?) where the RG senses so working out an optimum catchment area would be a bit of a guess. I intend to make my funnel the same size as the manual gauge and use the manual reading to calibrate against.

Re: Hydreon RG-11 results

Hi Experiment:- Using a plastic beaker with four pin holes in the base I measured 5mm of 'rain' using the manual gauge. I dripped this onto the RG and exactly 5mm of rain was recorded. So my conclucion is that a) standard sized drops improve the accuracy and b) it suggests that my surmise of bigger ...

Re: RG11 Accuracy

Hi Bruce
Surely the rain is going to run down so the firmware must somehow take account of that and if runs were detected as well as drops the RG would ovr read.

Re: RG11 Accuracy

Hi It would seem the unit is a drop detector / counter. If that is the case too many drops or a 'flow' of water is exactly what it can't cope with I think that was what I thought a funnel with holes might achieve - a more standard drop size scattered over the surface of the RG. It would need a bit o...

Re: RG11 Accuracy

Hi As Bruce said earlier - maybe it is too soon to think of mods but I am fairly sure that the catchment area has someting to do with the accuracy. So I shall still jump in with an idea. The picture is supposed to be a funnel with the top tilted away so the base shows. The base has four equal holes ...
