Re: Hall effect sensor for wind vane, or ultrasonic sensors

If you're interested in non-contact hall effect sensor for the windvane then the one I started to develop is described in this thread and may be useful:

Re: Weather related sensor

This can be done with an LED, photo transistor and clear acrylic rod. Essentially it relies on the difference in refractive index between air and water and the total internal reflection down the acrylic tube (in air). An LED and phototransistor are mounted at the top of the tube, the LED is pulsed a...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

Well I managed to source some diametrically magnetised NdFeB magnets and asembled the bench test windvane. I wrote a simple visual basic app to interface to the windvane for testing purposes and after a few teething problems the hall sensor was functioning without problems. I have a magnet-sensor ga...

Re: An idea for improved Fine Offset wind vane electronics

As Gina says, this will be very interesting information, I too had assumed FO just had an ADC and interpretted the voltage produced by the resistor combinations as 16 bearing points. Not sure why they'd need to have some 'dead-band' in between. I'll be using my ucontroller to generate the analogue v...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

1 degree is way OTT I couldn't agree more, but all that extra resolution effectively came free due to the hall effect sensor I'm using. If nothing else, it will prove useful if filtering the output. Incidentally, here's a BOM of the sensor parts: AS5134 Sensor: GBP4.20 uController: GBP1.80 Magnet: ...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

The anemometer used an optical encoder with 360 slots. There was also a second track that had just one hole in it. this was to provide and index pulse. the windvane had a disk with one hole in it. Sounds like this is back to front, I would expect the windvane to have 360 slots and an index hole. Th...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

OK, managed to get the mechanics finished for the bench test model.

from top down: top plate (with bearing installed), main body, bottom plate, bottom bearing, hall sensor, carbon fibre shaft with magnet holder (to left).

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

I'd go for a wide angle LED to illuminate all phototransistors at the same time, if you've got the luxury of an ADC then you can determine the luminance on each PT. Only drawback of an ADC is conversion/acquisition times, but if you're on a transition does it matter since resolution is 22.5deg? Assu...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

Just a quick update on the windvane. I've got communication with the hall sensor via I2C. Now working on the mechanics for the bench test model (double bearing) - top bearing plate machined, bottom bearing and sensor mount this weekend hopefully. Still need to source suitable magnet (diametrically m...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

I'd be interested to know if you plan to keep the LED's on permanently and log when a direction change occurs though the phototransistors, or are you planning on sampling the phototransitors every so often and log the direction at each sample interval. If the latter, what sample interval are you pro...

Re: Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

This isn't quite true, of course. You could implement the protocol of an existing station somehow (i.e. emulate a real station)... That's eventually what I intend to do, emulate the PC to logger link. As mentioned before (somewhere), it's a shame there isn't a generic station comms protocol. I'm go...

Homebuilt Wind Vane 1deg resolution

Work is progressing fairly well on the windvane: Circuit schematic complete (there's actually not too much to it!) ucontroller code 90% complete (interfaces the hall-effect sensor to an I2C bus) - should be testing with the sensor this evening Hardware design for bench testing 75% complete (this won...

Re: Future Modding Plans

Thanks for the welcomes!

First tech question...

Does anyone know what the typical sampling rate of the windvane is/should be?

Cheers,

Future Modding Plans

I'm a newbie to the forums and this site but not to weather stations. I was drawn by the Cumulus software and the excellent comments I had heard about it from other sites. I built my first weather station back in the mid '80s as an 'O' level CDT project it was ambitious as it was made from scratch f...
