Re: Increasing Wind Speed and Gusts

When you are saying timing, what does that involve? Is it how the data is read communicating with the USB? Or timing to do with some other issue? As Steve mentioned, likely the 150 ms sleep isn't long enough. My stations will take a bit longer to send the data than the Fine Offset, as it has more e...

Re: Increasing Wind Speed and Gusts

Sorry folks - have been travelling and just returned. I'll try to poke a bit this week, but I have not even started to look at MX as I don't own a PI. I do agree with Steve that this is likely a timing issue, but can't imagine why it should be so.

Re: Fine offset USB power

Actually the whole idea is bad. If you truly want to run wires out to your wireless transmitter location, buy a cheap 3V power supply through eBay or similar. Running a long wire from outdoors to your computer is a great way to inject lightning into your computer to make the magic smoke leak out. Ev...

Re: AERCUS INSTRUMENTS WS3083 PRO

Looks like it has some potential to work depending on what software it comes with, but would require a test to be sure. It appears to be used for sharing storage typically, and the weather station is very different, so the device would need to support the HID device driver, not the mass storage devi...

Re: Maplin station range issue

My thinking on batteries is indeed to use 1 x LiFeP04, with a dummy cell, simply to get the best possible voltage. I use them in other radio gear, and they are very good. I've used a different concept on my own station at home, I have a mains power unit, with backup dry cells behind a diode so that...

Re: tweaking readings for errors

I thought that was the case - then I saw that indoor temperature was there. So then I thought it might be that there just wasn't space in the calibration popup, and it might still be available in the cumulus.ini file. But it wasn't in the documentation, so I thought I'd just ask LOL. Thanks for a qu...

tweaking readings for errors

It looks like Cumulus can correct for minor errors of almost every parameter except indoor humidity. Is this an oversight, or is there an undocumented line in the cumulus.ini that can be used to calibrate this measurement too?

Re: ACCURATE THERMOMETER

Another "classic" temperature sensor is the DS18B20; a little more expensive, with a similar accuracy. But as it gives a digital output (SPI "one wire" bus) to 1/16 degree C resolution, there are no further potential errors of D-A conversion and/or reference voltages, etc.. The ...

Re: cold weather wiring

Hi Tony, How far is the transmitter from the receiver? Orientation can help as well. I was also originally worried about accessibility for changing batteries often, but my lithiums are now approaching their four year anniversary and are still going strong. Also, FYI, what many of us do is extend the...

Re: cold weather wiring

I think your unit may be broken. I'm running a 1080 just down the road from you in Whitehorse, and have had absolutely no issues at -40 with lithiums. Even alkalines are fine to about 30' at those temps. I'm also running a custom built station that initially had issues with temperatures below about ...

Re: WH-1080 "class ohlson" showing too low wind speed values

Hello. Is there a custom firmware or way to modify the wind speed sensor to show higher values on main unit ? I am constantly getting 4-5 m/s too low gust speeds. Shoud I shorten cup rods ?   It would be almost impossible to do that and maintain balance. Why not simply change ...

Re: WH1081 USB device

The cable is a defacto "standard" - that is to say, while it is not covered by the USB spec, many manufacturers have gone this route for everything from weather stations to portable hard drives. You can likely pick up similar cables in any corner store, and yes it is straight through. The ...

Re: 0.01" vs. 0.3 mm Rain Gauge Bucket Tips

Mark, the issue isn't rounding - it's un-rounding a previously rounded number and then multiplying to amplify the error even further. I think you need the original tip count. You can calculate that as an intermediate step and use Excel to round to an integer, but it will be +/- 1 tip, which unfortun...
