Cumulus not seeing Vantage Vue

Having had my Davis vantage Vue working on a Windows 10 PC, via a USB port, for a few months, I have decided to move it two a Ubuntu laptop. Power to the USB ports / hub can be disabled.

I put some batteries in an old base station and is started to received outside data even though I don't have any outside sensors, how can I find were the data is coming from?

Look like the rain sensor is a built in problem with the magnet and reed switch (and spiders which were doing loop-the-loop last night when I was changing the battries).
